The Wind In The Willows Cruise

Wednesday 19 June
Plans are now finalised for our cruising on the Thames

Our coach will be departing from Painshill Park at 10.30 for Caversham where we have arranged with the Crowne Plaza hotel to be ready to welcome us for a comfort stop – and more – before we board our boat. The hotel is in the perfect spot for us right alongside the river pier from which our cruse will start.  This reduces to an absolute minimum the amount of walking that our day will involve.

And for those of us concerned about how to manage our refreshment before we embark, the Crowne Plaza will be delighted to serve us – on our own account – coffee, drinks and any early lunch requirements we chose from the hotel’s Brunch Menu.

Barry will be in touch with all those signed up so that we can pre-order from the menu what takes our fancy.

Suitably refreshed it will take no more than a couple of minutes for all of us to be on board for the  departure of the ‘Caversham Princess’ before our three-hour round-trip cruising upstream to Pangbourne.

Once under way our boat will pass through Mapledurham Lock and the village of Whitchurch en route to Pangbourne.  We will be passing through the amazing scenery that probably inspired Kenneth Graham’s ‘Wind In The Willows’. Whilst meandering around the twists and turns of the river – passing islands, riverside homes, rowing clubs and open country – we will be served a full Cream Tea with Scones, Clotted Cream and Strawberry Jam.

It promises to be a terrific day out. Barry reports he has almost a sell out on his hands already. But if our news about the very small amount of walking this adventure will involve has got you thinking you really might like to get involved you can most certainly get your name on any Waiting List our organiser might have to set up.

Who's Into Dire Straits?

Tuesday 9 July in Guildford
We can marvel again at those soaring guitar solos and instantly recognisable riffs that first delighted us when CDs were the new thing.

Money for Nothing is a sonic spectacular presented by the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre featuring the authentic sounds of one of the most successful rock bands of all time.

Their international hits include Romeo and Juliet, Sultans of Swing, Private Investigations, Walk of Life, Brothers in Arms, So Far Away, Money for Nothing,… and there were many more.  Our evening’s programme will draw on the much-loved classics from Dire Strait’s six platinum albums.

We have arranged an early two course supper at the Olivo restaurant a short 2-minute walk from the theatre. Parking is available at the Theatre car park at Millbrook.

The cost of the two-course meal followed by the show, on a group booking basis for 25 members, will be £60 per person. We will be happy to arrange car sharing.

We need to know numbers by May 27, so please click the I’m Interested button so John can add your names to the list.

Moleside's Summer Hog Roast

Friday 26 July at Churchgate Hous
We’re planning our club’s Summer celebration meal this year to be perfectly in tune with the mood of the season.

This year we have decided to reduce the formality, and the cost of our usual summer get together.

We have booked a Hog Roast, which will be held on the lawn behind Churchgate House. The cost will be around £35pp – almost a third of that of our last summer lunch – this to include salads, choice of desserts and drinks.  A vegetarian option can be available if required.

The specialist chef will be on site in good time to prepare the meal – slow cooked for perfection – and we plan to start serving the food at 2 30pm.

Alec has kindly agreed to let us use his Marquees in case of inclement weather and we will also have the use of the Hall and its facilities for the afternoon.

Our Chairman is organising this special, informal event, so we hope you can join us. Click the green button to register your interest.

Shakespeare At Painshill - Almost

Friday 2 August
You are cordially invited to attend a fun evening in the beautiful Walled Gardens of Painshill Park in Cobham.

Members of Moleside, their partners – and perhaps some friends – will be enjoying a performance of an abridged version of A Midsummer Night’s  Dream and Twelfth Night- performed in the open air – some of which the Bard would recognise.

We are welcome to bring a picnic or other food/snacks and suitable chairs or other seating arrangements. Drinks to purchase will be available from the bar. The performance will involve 2 acts of 40 minutes each. Presented byThe Four Forty Theatre Group this will be an experience of hilarity and humour created broadly around the work of Shakespeare.

We must hope conditions are clement but the show will go on regardless of the weather! There is ample parking at the site and the cost will be £18 per person.

Do let Paul know of the names you’d like him to add to his list for tickets.

Malverleys Garden Visit

Wednesday 21 August
Rarely open to the public, Moleside members who join us on this visit are in for a special treat.

‘The Malverleys’ is a Country House Estate in Hampshire near the border with Berkshire, South-West of Newbury.  It is about 55 miles (80 minutes by road) from Cobham.  It has been owned for the last 15 years by the Von Opel family, who have converted ten acres – some five per cent of the estate – around the house into a new garden. Their Head Gardener is Mat Reese – a horticulture expert with broad experience including work at Wisley, Kew and Great Dixter.

When we arrive we will be served tea, coffee and cake – plus WC access – as a prelude to an introductory talk by Mr Rees followed by a guided tour of the gardens.  In all this is likely to take about two hours.

Assuming we have over 25 members signing-up we will arrange a coach to take us. We will go on to lunch at the nearby Donnington Grove Hotel – a distinctive Strawberry Hill Gothic mansion which enjoys lovely views of the surrounding area.   There will then be an opportunity to stretch our legs in the grounds and to inspect the 14th century Donnington Castle, before returning home.

The cost with the coach and lunch included will be £75 per person. Click the button to show Andrew you are interested – we need to know numbers in good time to book our  coach.

OLIVER at the CFT

Thursday 5 September

Everyone knows Oliver, the Lionel Bart musical that made Ron Moody a star.

This summer the Chichester Festival Theatre is presenting a spectacular new production reconceived by director and choreographer Matthew Bourne and produced by Cameron Mackintosh. It promises to be an unforgettable show and is already being advertised as transferring to London’s West End in December.  We are going to be able to see it sooner than that – and enjoy a meal together in the Minerva restaurant opposite the theatre.

Seats are in very short supply but we have 40 reserved and, appreciating that personal plans sometimes have to change, we will be happy to set up a waiting list in case demand exceeds immediate supply.

Anticipated pricing: £100 each – for our seats plus the two course meal and transport from Cobham. Last year we travelled to The Sound Of Music by private car. We hope this year that sufficient interest will make it possible for us to use a coach.

Arrangements are once again in Peter’s hands and the tickets he’s been able to reserve can only be held for 1 month – so sign-up is urgently required followed by prompt payment when pricing is confirmed.
