Walking with Moleside

Our club’s monthly Walking programme provides great opportunities for our members to share their discoveries of surprising local places. Leading a recent walk Derick introduced us to the impressive results of what were, only a decade ago, the workings of the Buckland Sand and Silica Company.

Commercial extraction stopped here some 10 years ago and in its place we were introduced to an elegant, deep water lake with opportunities for carefully managed wild swimming, relaxing water sports as well as eating facilities for a memorable day out – including a most enjoyable, not too demanding walk.

Thank you Derick – more details about Buckland Park Lake are on the web.
The truth is we like a relatively flat route. 4 miles is ideal for us. And our leaders know that If a little erxtra therapeutic exercise is needed along their chosen route, it should be kept brief and is best experienced very early in our morning’s progress.

This short and sweet up hill challenge from the Car Park on the top of Box Hill on this walk led by David allowed him to remind us that our corner of England offers a selection of views that is hard to beat.

And this was also a walk with a surprise. The mysterious, flint encrusted Broadwood Tower built by a member of the famous piano making family – and one time resident of Juniper Hall in the valley below – shortly after the 1815 Battle of Waterloo.

Moleside Walks are invariably on the third Thursday of each month and – equally regularly – finish with a drink and a meal in a carefully chosen local pub.
All members and their partners are always welcome.
